What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a hands-on medical treatment method. It uses knowledge and manual skills. An osteopath looks at and treats different systems in the body: bones, muscles, nerves, lymphatics, organs, and blood vessels. Osteopathy views the body as a whole. The goal is to restore balance among these systems, encouraging the body to heal itself and return to its normal function.
The History of Osteopathy
Osteopathy was founded in 1872 by American physician Andrew T. Still. He developed an innovative treatment system based on the structure and function of the body, as well as its natural ability to self-heal. In 1892, he established his own school of osteopathy.
Since then, osteopathy has spread widely and is now practiced in more than 20 countries around the world. In the United States, it is an integral part of medical studies. In Europe, osteopaths are state-recognized in countries such as England, France, Switzerland, Finland, Malta, and Iceland. In many other countries, osteopathy is also acknowledged and enjoys widespread practice.
Osteopathy is a combination of three elements
Science: It is based on an in-depth understanding of classical medical disciplines, such as anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, embryology, organ medicine, and biomechanics.
Art: This element involves understanding the patient’s issues, both physical and psychological, to develop a plan to restore balance within the patient’s systems, thereby improving their health and well-being.
Technique: Through mastered examination and treatment techniques, the osteopath applies a structured approach. Osteopathic techniques are fundamental in bridging science and art into a holistic treatment approach.
